Grimm is handing a stack of books to the female librarian, saying "Excuse me, can I take out these three self-help books?", to which she replies "Of course. It's wonderful seeing a dog trying to improve himself." We then see Grimm using the books as a "ladder" to reach the cookie jar on the top shelf in Mother Goose's kitchen.

Marten Reed: So, why do YOU wanna work in a library?
Claire Augustus: Why WOULDN'T I?
Claire Augustus: Vast collections of knowledge, organized by class and subclass, division and section. Everything in its right place. No distractions, no pointless babbling conversation, no yelling or running around like an idiot. Just peace and quiet.
Claire Augustus: And being a librarian is more than just stamping books and shushing people. A good librarian educates! Enriches their community! Introduces children and adults alike to the wonders of the written word!
Marten Reed: What about you, Gabby?
Gabby: I like books.
Marten Reed: That's it?
Gabby: Yep.
Claire Augustus: Wait- wait up! I like books too!

April, Margaret: GAAAH! We'll do it!

Margaret: Oh, SUUURE! Now I am the one who sucks!

Sheldon is telling his talking duck Arthur that "The Library of Alexandria was the greatest repository of knowledge in the ancient world. With amazing scrolls gathered from every point on the map. And when the library was destroyed by fire in 48 AD, it was the worst blow to human knowledge in all of history. It was Julius Caesar who accidentally set fire to it, when he--"

Arthur interrupts him, saying "Don't be a chump. Someone like Julius Caesar doesn't ACCIDENTALLY set fire to a library. Think about it."

The final panel flashes back to Julius Caesar carrying an armful of scrolls, screaming at the female librarian "... Late fees?? LATE FEES??"

My Mom the Librarian

A special Mother's Day surprise! Our Alaskan friend Pat Race, who recently contributed a fun Unshelved Book Club strip, wrote today's tribute to his mother, librarian (and Unshelved fan) Carol Race. Happy Mother's Day, Carol! And thanks for the great strip, Pat!

Panel #1
Narration: My mom is a librarian and I grew up in the stacks reading about knights and detectives and adventures

Panel #2
Narration: I didn't always read the books my mom liked.
Carol: Comics aren't real books, there aren't enough words.
Young Pat: I guess I'll have to read twice as many!

Panel #3
Young Pat: Ok, I found some "real" books.

Panel #4
Carol: [holding a book named "Spells & Hexes"] Hmmm... maybe you want to check out some TinTin instead?

Panel #5
Narration: Mom really loves storytime.
Carol: "A forest grew and grew - and grew until his ceiling hung with vines."

Panel #6
Narration: She practiced by reading picture books to us at home... All the way through high school.
Teenage Pat: Seriously? Harold and the Purple Crayon?
Pat's Sister: Again?

Panel #7
Narration: [card catalog goes "Poof" and turns into a PC] The library was a different place when I was a kid but change was coming.

Panel #8
Young Pat: [typing on a computer]

Panel #9
Young Pat: Nooo way.

Panel #10
Young Pat: [typing on a computer]

Panel #11
Young Pat: MOM!

Panel #12
Young Pat: It's connected to... everything.

Panel #13
Narration: I always wonder what will be next.
Pat: So Mom, what does the future of the library look like? Do they become more like community centers? Internet access points? Are they even necessary now that we have the Internet?
Carol: I don't know about the future. It's big. I just feel like libraries are so important... and we all need storytime.

Panel #14
Narration: Yeah... We all need storytime.

Happy Mother's Day and congratulations to Carol Race on her retirement!! Love you mom!

Panel 2: Alex says "No way, it's not going to cost a dime." She asks "How so?"
Panel 3: Alex is putting little shoes on a dog, saying "I just put some soft booties on my dog and cats and let them chase each other around The Library."
Panel 4: The dog and three cats (all wearing shoes) run around the floor, as Alex says "And they shine the floor while running around!"

From google.com:

Dagwood is humiliated in a June 30th, 2001 Blondie comic strip when he asks the female librarian if he can check out a book again. When she inquires as to why he didn't finish it, he explains that he was sidetracked by some TV shows. The librarian refuses and responds, "You left a fine book and got hooked on some dumb TV shows?! I'm sorry, you just don't seem like our kind of people."
