Case Study No. 1636: Madame Leona (Wannabe Librarian)

Epic Mickey - Long Story
15:58
Part 34 of 48

Locations:
Lonesome Manor Stretching Room
The Mad Doctor Part 2
Lonesome Manor Library

Here we find Mickey in the Stretching Room. No racks here; it's the paintings that stretch. They look pretty normal at first, but they become humorously macabre as you see what happens below them. However, the paintings have been scrambled up, and to leave this room, Mickey has to descramble them.

It's pretty straightforward and hoenstly not much of a puzzle. Of course, there's so much running around here because this room is needlessly big, so I'm sure anything more complicated would've given people aneurysms.

Of course, what would an Epic Mickey chamber be without hidden goodies? On the second floor of the Stretching Room, use Thinner on the column with the man standing on the dynamite barrel, get behind the painting, and spin the cog in the middle to turn the floor. You'll find Gremlin Sydney, an artist among gremlins who will instantly fix up the paintings for you. On the third floor, spin the painting with the explorers trying to keep away from the crocodiles (NOT the cog in the center), and you will find Extra Content of the Mad Doctor behind the portion of the painting with the crocodiles. There is also a Gold Pin on the top floor in the column of the old lady sitting on the tombstone, in the portion with the busts. (Make sure to misalign or use Thinner on at least one of the paintings before going to the top floor, or spinning the gear in the center of the room will bring Mickey to the exit rather than take him to the top floor).

It's all a lot of trial and error, but by now, you should know the game lives and breathes this kind of gameplay.

Oh yeah, and be carful with the Blotlings at the end. As you can see, the floor is made of Paint, and if Mickey falls in, there is no getting out. Behind them is a projector for "The Mad Doctor: Part II," which leads to the Library.

The Stretching Room exists in the real Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland, in the walking portion. Guests are brought into an octagonal room by an actor playing a pale butler, with four paintings, and the room's ceiling appears to stretch upwards, the paintings stretching with them. (In reality, the bottom part of the room is an elevator going downwards into the ride part of the attraction.) Three of the paintings can be seen here; the fourth involves another explorer with his friends sinking into quicksand.

"The Mad Doctor: Part II" concerns the second part of the short, where we learn why th Mad Doctor took Pluto and when Mickey gets caught and about to get sawed in half when...it turns out it was just a bad dream. The Mad Doctor is real in Wasteland though. I wasn't sure of how to get the FIlm Reel here, so I had Mickey jump in the fire, which worked...then it turns out I could extinguish the fire. Go fig.

The Library is where Madame Leona hangs out. She oversees the books and bookshelves that crowd this area. Poltergeists have run amok here, causing the bookshlves to slide back and forth and the books to fly around the room. Leona respects Mickey, it seems, and knows of his exploits in Wasteland. She'll let Mickey through, but only after dealing with the wayward books. (Leona seems to be based on the Spirit of the Mirror in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" (1937).)

Also, remember Ian in Bog Easy? How Mickey found a book? Well, now that we've made it to the Library, Mickey returns the book to Leona. In appreciation, she allows Mickey to take...a hatchet. Just what Mickey wanted.

Also, here we see the battle with the msot awkward camera angle in this playthrough. How was I supposed to even play that? I couldn't move the camera either.

Our run through Lonesome Manor's library will continue in the next video.

[Mickey Mouse and Gremlin Gus enter the library in Lonesome Manor (which features moving bookcases and books flying through the air by themselves)]
GUS: Madame Leona is somewhere ahead. She'll tell us what to do.
[the player grabs one of the flying books]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] Yes. I see you treasure literature as much as I.
[the player avoids the bookcases, then uses Mickey's paintbrush to "fill in" the missing piece of a large skull in the middle of the floor]
GUS: Ah, the poltergeists have stopped causing trouble.
[the bookcases stop moving, and the skull disappears into the floor]
GUS: Well, that takes care of that, I suppose ... It looks like repairing that skull caused the bookcases to settle. Too bad we had to make our way through before stopping them, eh? I'll bet Madame Leona can explain what's going on around here.
[the player climbs the stairs to find Madame Leona (who appears as the ghostly head of a woman floating inside a green bubble)]
MADAME LEONA: The chaos in my library must be stopped. This haunting is out of control! The ghosts disturbing the bookcases have sent many of my prized books flying away!
[cut to a closeup of another half-missing skull attached to a wall somewhere in the Manor]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] First, you must seek out the broken skulls that have freed these spirits. Repair them all and the spirits will leave my bookcases.
[cut to an overhead shot of the books flying around the ceiling of the library]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] Second, collect the fly away books that are still here in this room. I sent ghost Ian to Bog Easy to retrieve one of my books. He returned and told me you helped him recover it. I am thankful. I shall share a secret. In the rafters overheard there is a hatchet ... The same hatchet once wielded by the original mistress of this house. If you find it while collecting my books, you may keep it.
[cut to a closeup of a painting falling off the wall in another part of the library]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] Regardless of all that, restore my art collection. My paintings have also fallen into disarray!
[cut back to Mickey and Madame Leona]
MADAME LEONA: If you must leave my art and books in chaos, I understand. You have much to attend to. However, I insist that you calm the restless spirits in this Library before I can allow you to leave.
["Quest Added: Settle the Library Bookcases" appears on screen]
["Quest Added: Catch the Flying Books" appears on screen]
["Quest Added: Restore Leona's Paintings" appears on screen]
[the player climbs up another flight of stairs, then uses paint thinner to reveal a secret room with a swith on the floor (which Mickey steps on)]
GUS: The books. They've stopped!
[the moving bookcases behind Mickey retract into the wall, and a secret panel turns around to reveal another half-missing skull (while a clock appears on screen counting down from ten seconds)]
GUS: You triggered the secret panel that concealed that skull. Let's go fix it.
[the player races over and uses Mickey's paintbrush to fix the skull before time runs out, as the bookcases rearrange to form a staircase to the upper level]
GUS: The spirits must like you. They shifted the bookcases into a stair formation. Shall we go up?
[the panel flips back over to conceal the newly-repaired skull]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] Only one skull remains to be repaired. You are doing very well, Mickey.
[the player climbs up to the next level, and uses paint thinner to reveal another secret room with a switch on the floor ... stepping on the switch activates a platform behind Mickey (while a clock appears on screen counting down from six seconds)]
[the player jumps on the platform, then uses paint thinner to clear several cobwebs before finding another gremlin trapped in a jar (which Mickey smashes open)]
JARVIS: Many thanks, fellas! I promise to return the favor somewhere down the line. For now I need to stay out of Leona's sight. She doesn't care much for me ... See you soon!
[the gremlin disappears, then the player "shoots" one of the flying books with Mickey's paintbrush]
GUS: Ah! Its pages are stuck together! Quick now, go and pick it up!
[the player jumps down and collects the fallen book, then continues searching the library before reaching another wall and "erasing" it with paint thinner]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] I'd prefer to have my library restored, not destroyed.
[the player enters the secret room and fixes the crooked painting hanging on the wall]
GUS: Well, there's one of her paintings fixed!
[the player avoids more moving bookscases, then finds the last half-missing skull and uses Mickey's paintbrush to repair it (causing the bookcases behind him to stop moving)]
GUS: That did it! These bookcases have settled!
[another bookcase flips around to reveal a secret door]
GUS: Oh my! A door!
[the repaired skull disappears into the wall]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] Well done. The spirits have returned to the skulls where they reside. Thank you.
["Quest Updated: Settle the Library Bookcases" appears on screen, as the player smashes a nearby jar and releases another gremlin]
JUMBO: Well, aren't you helpful. For a price, I could help you out as well! I'll cut you a deal even! Give me 50 E-tickets and I'll round up those flying books for you.
GUS: Pay Jumbo 50 E-tickets to catch the Flying Books?
[the player selects "No"]
JUMBO: Not going for it, huh? Well good luck!
[the player continues searching the library, then shoots one of the flying books with paint thinner]
MADAME LEONA: [from off camera] Well, you have caught some of my books, but you destroyed others. Consequently, I shall withhold the pin I give to those that value literature.
["Quest Completed: Catch the Flying Books" appears on screen, then the player continues exploring the library before finding another painting and fixing it]
GUS: This painting is set!
[the player finds another painting and fixes it]
GUS: One more to go!
[the player finds the last painting and fixes it]
GUS: That's the final painting! Surely Madame Leona will reward you for restoring her collection ...
[the player returns to Madame Leona]
MADAME LEONA: Have you been busy, mouse? You have restored my art collection! Thank you. Please accept this pin ... one awarded only to those with a true appreciation for fine art.
["Quest Completed: Restore Leona's Paintings" appears on screen]
MADAME LEONA: You have calmed my restless bookcases!
["Quest Completed: Settle the Library Bookcases" appears on screen]
MADAME LEONA: Here is the way out. Off you go.
[cut to a doorway opening beneath them, but a giant creature jumps in front of it]
GUS: Oh no! Looks like we're gonna have to get through that Slobber!
["New Item Received: Art Appreciator" appears on screen, as the player fights the Slobber and eventually defeats it]

From wikipedia.org:

Epic Mickey is a 2010 action-adventure platforming video game designed by Warren Spector and developed by Junction Point Studios for the Wii console. The game focuses on Mickey Mouse, who accidentally damages a world created by Yen Sid for forgotten characters and concepts, and is forced to fix the world while combating antagonists with a magic paintbrush. Epic Mickey notably features the first appearance of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit since 1943 as a major character, who was one of Walt Disney's first successful cartoon characters before the character was licensed under the ownership of Universal Studios. The character was regained by The Walt Disney Company in 2006 under the guidance of Bob Iger. The game is much darker and more complex than previous Mickey Mouse games.

From wikia.com:

Madame Leona is a woman's head inside a round green crystal ball, who lives in the library of the Lonesome Manor. In the original "Haunted Mansion" Disney theme park ride (and the 2003 film based on the ride), she is known as Madame Leota.

She is upset at one of The Lonesome Ghosts for not returning a book of her's. Mickey can assist the ghost when visiting Bog Easy by getting the book for her before heading off to the Manor.

There are three quests that Madame Leona has for Mickey:

* Thin or collect six flying books (with help of Gremlin Jumbo and 50 E-Tickets)
* Fixing and painting the pictures
* Find the three skulls and paint them

Mickey can collect a silver pin from Madame Leona if he collected all six of the flying books. If he thinned them out, he will receive no reward. Mickey can also earn the Art Appreciator pin if he completed the painting restoration quest. If Mickey completed all three quests, Madame Leona will return the favor by using her voodoo magic to repel the Slobber that arrives when she opens the door containing the Haunted House Scene 2 projector screen.

She will not be affected by Paint or Thinner, but if you try to use thinner on her she will say how rude you are.

Quotes
(if you found the book in Bog Easy for Ian and return it to her)
* "Please give him my regards when you return to Bog Easy."
* "I sent Ghost Ian to Bog Easy to retrieve one of my books. I understand you have it. Return it to me and I will be generous. As I have my book back I will be understanding with Ian. Once again, he has failed me. If I see him again, I shall make a bookmark out of him!"
(when you repair the skulls)
* "The Mad Doctor loosed spirits by shattering the skulls that contained them. Now they toss my bookshelves about like child's playthings. Please restore their skull repositories so that they might rest again. Three of the skulls are in my Library. I'm certain you fill find them all."
* "There are still two skulls to be restored, Mickey."
* "Only one skull remains to be repaired. You are doing very well, Mickey."
* "Well done. The spirits have returned to the skulls where they reside. Thank you."
(if you catch all the books, you get the Silver Pin)
* "I have a special pin for one that shares my love of books. Return to me, and it is yours."
* "You have caught all of my flyaway books! Thank you! Here, have this Silver Pin for your troubles!"
(if you complete all the tasks, she will make the Slobber disappear for you)
* "Your tasks are complete. Come speak with me!"
* "Oh, no. After your kind deeds I cannot allow this evil to befall you. I will channel the mystic energies and use them to dispel that disgusting creature ... "
* "Clobber, clobber the ugly Slobber. Melt him away and away he will stay."
* "There. Good riddance."

From ign.com:

Now you've reached the library. You're getting much closer to finding the doctor, but some work still lies ahead of you. When you appear in the stage, head forward along the hallway and descend some stairs. Ahead, you'll see shelving sliding back and forth. You can pause ahead of each set of shelves and let them meet, then safely run through them as they briefly separate. Repeat the process on all of the shelving.

When you reach the far side of the carpeted area with the shelves, ascend some stairs to find Madame Leona waiting at the top, near a window. She appears as a floating head encased in a green aura. She will give you three tasks when you talk to her. You need to find and paint in several skulls throughout the area, collect books that have escaped from their shelves and are now flying through the area (you may already have collected one by accident on your way to meet with Leona) and finally, you need to restore her art collection. During that same conversation, you'll also receive credit for returning her book to her, if you found it in an earlier stage.

As for Madame Leona's three tasks, you should start by worrying about the skulls. You can jump down to the carpeted area just in front of the balcony on which Madame Leona rests. There, you'll find a half-skull along the floor. Paint in the rest of it and the nearby bookcases will stop sliding back and forth. Now you need to find only two more skulls. Head back up the balcony so that you're near Madame Leona again, then look out along the room that you've just crossed. Note the sliding book cases along higher ledges to your left and right. Climb up toward the left ledge and start along it but stop just short of the first shelf. Stand against the railing, then wait for the shelf to mash against the railing. As it starts to recede, double jump across to the next space between another shelf before that first shelf returns. Repeat the process on subsequent shelves until you reach the far wall, which you should spray with thinner to reveal a hidden room. Head through that room by double jumping across the solid ground while avoiding the sliding shelves and thinner pools. On the far side, there's a second skull. Paint it to stop the shelves from spinning, then look around. You'll see Gremlin Jumbo in a cage. Use a spin attack to free him and he will offer to retrieve the flying books for 50 e-tickets. That's a bargain, so take him up on his offer.

Now you need to find one final skull. Head back toward the main room with Leona. As you do, note the painting frame hanging crookedly on the wall. You should see a gear behind it. Jump up and use a spinning attack on the gear to spin the painting. When it comes horizontal, spray it with paint to reveal it. If it is horizontal in the right manner, you'll receive credit for adjusting a painting. If you don't, spray the painting with thinner and spin it around to its next horizontal position, then try again. Once the painting is properly adjusted, head out and into the large foyer area where you saw the first sliding bookcases. Drop down and there's another painting in that area, which you can adjust as you did the one a moment ago. Now there are only two left to fix. You can find those on either side of the stairs that you descended as you first entered the area. Paint them in (there's no need to spin them) and now you've restored all of the paintings. Talk to Madame Leona for a Silver Pin that she'll give you as a reward for ensuring that her books were returned. She will also award you with an Art Appreciator Pin.

Now you can look out at the room again. Previously when you did that, you headed up some stairs to the left. There were stairs to the right as well, though, and now is your chance to ascend those and find more sliding shelves. Work along that higher balcony. You can jump over to the tops of the bookcases below that have stopped moving to make it easier to progress safely. When you reach the far end of the chamber, spray thinner on the wall to reveal a hidden room. There's a pressure plate inside. Step on it to temporarily stop the nearby shelves from moving. Now you have 10 seconds to go back the way you came to the wall on the far end of those shelves, where a skull has appeared. Run over to it and spray it with paint to make it materialize. Behind you, the shelves will now form a staircase so that you can climb to the area's rafters. To your right, Madame Leona will congratulate her and tell you to go see her.

Don't visit Madame Leona just yet, however, or you'll miss out on treasure. Instead, climb up the staircase that the shelves have formed to reach the rafters. Up there, you'll find another colorful wall. Spray it with thinner to reveal a pressure plate. Stand on the plate and you'll give yourself six seconds to run over to a shelf step that will raise, then jump up to the first rafter. You'll have to use thinner to clear a spiderweb out of your way first, though. When you arrive on the rafter, note that there are several Sweeper enemies in this area. They fire projectiles that will erase the rafters right out from under you, so be ready to befriend those foes with paint and possibly to paint in rafters that you lose during the scuffle. There also is webbing to eliminate. As you progress along the rafters, you'll reach a 'T' in the path where you can head left to find the Library extra content and to free Gremlin Jarvis from a cage that is guarded by a Sweeper.

If you instead go right at that split in the path, you can use thinner on an especially large web and then jump down to a platform where a Sweeper waits. Eliminate him, then use thinner on the nearby wallpaper to reveal a large room nearby with Spladoosh enemies occupying it. Among them, there is a red chest that you can open to find the Hatchet, good for a side quest that Horace should have given you in Mean Street.

Near that chest, there is a hole in the floor. You can fall through it to return to the platform where you began the stage. Head down the stairs again, then look to the right. Spray thinner along that wall and you'll reveal an opening. You can pass through it to find a secret chamber with a blue treasure chest. Open the chest to obtain Donald's Left Leg, a piece that you can use to assemble Animatronic Donald.

Head back into the main foyer and continue along it to finally meet with Madame Leona. She will be pleased that you have tended to each of her tasks. She activates the projector screen, but in the process she unleashes a Slobber enemy. If you haven't completed Madame Leon's full list of tasks, you'll have to battle the Slobber if you want to make your way to the projector screen. Even if you don't defeat him, you at least need to lure him out so that you can sneak past him. If you are fighting the Slobber and you've forgotten the process, the best strategy is to keep a safe distance from him (as allowed by the cramped corridors where this battle takes place) and wait for him to start sucking you toward him. As you slide toward him, let loose a steady stream of either paint or thinner. You'll have to do that several times to win the battle. Then it's on to the next action stage.
