It tracks two brothers, representing Italy's two sides, from the 1960s through the 2000s. Here Matteo meets a beautiful photographer in Sicily. If you like Northern Exposure, you will probably appreciate Best of Youth. Great, dense movie. Subtitles.

[scene opens with a young woman taking photos of passers-by while sitting in an outdoor cafe, as a young man at a nearby table begins speaking to her (without actually looking in her direction)]
MATTEO CARATI: Are you looking for mystery?
[she puts down her camera and gives him a quizzical look]
MIRELLA UTANO: You talking to me?
MATTEO CARATI: [pause] You have to find the soul.
MIRELLA UTANO: How?
MATTEO CARATI: You have to look for it, inside.
["Palermo, Summer 1977" appears on screen, as she gets up and sits next to him]
MIRELLA UTANO: You know how to look inside?
[he smiles]
MATTEO CARATI: I do.
[he points to something off camera]
MATTEO CARATI: See that boy?
[she turns, then cut to a closeup of a young boy]
MATTEO CARATI: [from off camera] Look at his hand. It's confident, it demands.
[cut back to Matteo]
MATTEO CARATI: He's got a cockade ... He's the best of the class.
[she smiles]
MIRELLA UTANO: Could be.
[he points to something else off camera]
MATTEO CARATI: See that elderly woman?
[cut to a closeup of an older woman]
MATTEO CARATI: [from off camera] Two wedding bands. She's a widow and she's lonely.
[cut back to Mirella, who smiles]
MIRELLA UTANO: You're not Sicilian.
[he makes a "tsk" sound]
MIRELLA UTANO: Are you mocking me?
[he makes the sound again, and they both laugh]
MIRELLA UTANO: Did you see "Stromboli" with Bergman?
MATTEO CARATI: Yes.
MIRELLA UTANO: I live there, but not for long. I took a librarian exam in Palermo. I want to leave the island.
[he points at her camera]
MATTEO CARATI: That? It's a professional camera.
MIRELLA UTANO: You're an expert?
MATTEO CARATI: I'm an expert on libraries, too.
MIRELLA UTANO: Really?
MATTEO CARATI: Yes.
MIRELLA UTANO: If I pass the exam, where should I go?
MATTEO CARATI: In Palermo, I don't know ... In Rome, at Villa Celimontana, there's one that's beautiful.
MIRELLA UTANO: Can I look for mystery?
[she takes his picture]
MATTEO CARATI: What mystery ... No!
[a car pulls up and the driver beeps his horn, as Matteo waves to him]
MATTEO CARATI: I have to go.
[he reaches into his pocket and puts some money on the table]
MIRELLA UTANO: Now?
MATTEO CARATI: Yes.
MIRELLA UTANO: What's your name?
[he pauses, then looks at her and gives his brother's name instead]
MATTEO CARATI: Uh ... Nicola.
MIRELLA UTANO: Mirella.
[he shakes her hand]
MATTEO CARATI: It's a pleasure. Excuse me, ciao.
[he turns and leaves]
MIRELLA UTANO: Ciao, Nicola.
