"A first-person action game inspired by roguelikes, immersive sims, and H. P. Lovecraft."
- eldritchgame.com

This game is some serious fun! It is the first in a while that has had me yearning to go back in, face the horrors again and attempt to return unscathed.

Do not be fooled. This game will suck you in and drain your brain of the last of it's sanity.

*****

So, we pretty much just dive straight in, foregoing any real meanderings through the library and it's contents, quickly recapping the back story and then jumping in to the first book, Dagon.

*****

Kudos Minor Key Games, this is a great title.

Also, special thank you to David Pittman (http://twit ter.com/dphrygian) for sorting out the pre-alpha copy for a play through!

Please go check out the site and give the game some well deserved attention:

From pcgamer.com:

Eldritch is a first-person, voxel-based indie roguelike. You begin as a '20s-styled adventurer trapped in a twisting library, forced to hunt the souls of Great Old Ones within the pages of ancient books. This means visiting the undersea realm of Dagon, Nyarlathotep's Egyptian-themed temple, and deeper, stranger places beyond that. When you die you're returned to the library with your equipment and upgrades gone, but you retain any currency that you've stored in your bank chest, and any zones you've unlocked stay that way.

From wikia.com:

While the glowing books found within the starting library can be used to access the three main worlds of the game, there are also books that can be read without causing you to teleport. They describe the world you are in, its history, contain some tips on who you are and why you are here and may have some hints on how to proceed.

The History of the Library, Vol. 1 of 4
Legends tell of a catastrophic event thousands of years ago, when earth fell to the wrath of the Old Ones. The few survivors discovered an ancient rite which they used to seal the dreadful beings in a labyrinthine prison. Life on Earth once again flourished, and the survivors formed a convent of guardians to protect the secret ritual of binding.

The History of the Library, Vol. 2 of 4
Thousands of years passed, and the Old Ones slumbered in their prison. In the late 19th century, archaeologists in Arabia unearthed the site where the binding ritual had been invoked. The disturbance rippled through the fabric of the cosmos and awoke the ancient beings. Forgotten horrors spilled forth, and Earth was again in peril.

The History of the Library, Vol. 3 of 4
In the early 20th century, when the Old Ones threatened Earth for the second time, the guardians reconvened in New England to perform the ritual of binding once again. A modest library was chosen to host the rite, and the guardians elected one among them --the Librarian-- to remain at the prison and protect it from further disturbances.

The History of the Library, Vol. 4 of 4
At a small library in New England, the guardians performed the arcane ritual of binding to imprison the Old Ones. The Librarian, a singular guardian chosen to protect the site, was locked away with the terrible beings. But unbeknownst to the other guardians, an errant word spoken during the ritual shattered the Librarian's mind and memories...

There are also pages from an explorer's journal which can be found throughout the game: Page One is located near the entry point in the first Dagon world, Page Two is lying on the floor of the library, Page Three is located near the entry point in the Endless Library just after you pass the archdoor, and Page Four is located on the first floor in the second world of the Endless Library just near the entrance, in the same room.

While not explicitly stated, it is implied that the Explorer and the Librarian are the same person (due to the Librarian's amnesia caused by the ritual).

Explorer's Journal, Page 1
Something quite peculiar has happened to me. I feel the need to record this, in the event that I should not return.
The last thing I recall, I was examining that curious book in the library... And now I have found myself in a dangerous world full of lurking monsters and treacherous traps.
If my research is correct, then I am in a lost temple to the ancient god Dagon. A powerful relic is rumored to be kept in the depths of this world. Perhaps it holds the key to my escape...

Explorer's Journal, Page 2
This library seems to go on forever. I am no longer certain that there is a way out. It feels as if I am somehow reliving the same experiences, day after day, endlessly.
If I am to find an exit from this madness, I believe it will be through those obscene glowing books. There is unimaginable power in those pages, and unspeakable horror...
It seems that the spirits of ancient deities lie dormant within the books, though I know not for what reason. But their collected power must be the key to my incarceration in this labyrinth...

Explorer's Journal, Page 3
Dear God no. I didn't know what I was doing.
I have found a way out of that library, but only now do I understand its true nature. In my escape, I have opened Pandora's box.
The library is an interdimensional prison, created thousands of years ago to contain the Old Ones. How I came to be trapped there remains a mystery to me, but it is clear that the exit was never meant to be opened.
Unimaginable horrors are now spilling onto Earth because of my actions. Can they ever be contained again?

Explorer's Journal, Page 4
I may have found a solution to the evil I unwittingly unleashed upon the world. In my research, I have learned of a "Ritual of Binding" which the mystics performed to contain the Old Ones the last time they threatened Earth.
The ritual of binding is performed by reading aloud the ancient words, which seals the invaders in an infinite prison spanning unknown dimensions; and then surrendering one person to serve as the eternal guardian of the prison.
The ritual may be augmented by lighting three candles. The candles will draw the targets to the heart of the prison and lull them into slumber.
Ancient texts speak of a further step in which the guardian's duty is relieved by the use of a consecrated surrogate, but the details are lost to time.

From wikia.com:

There are three finals in the game. The final you get depends upon if you have lit all the candles in the Endless Library and if you have all the sacred items with you.

Bad Final
You have just to gather all three Soul Orbs, open an archdoor to the Endless Library and fail to find and lit all three candles. After performing Ritual of Binding on the third floor of the third world of the Endless Library, you leave some of the Old Ones rampage the Earth and sacrifice yourself as the new "Librarian" guardian.

You read aloud the ancient words of the ritual of binding.
The Old Ones still remaining within the boundaries of the library are trapped, and will no longer pose any threat to Earth. Yet many more of them had already escaped, and still rempage beyond the library's walls.
Having done all you could, you complete the ritual by performing the final step: surrendering yourself to remain forever in the library as its guardian.

Good Final
You have to gather all three Soul Orbs, open an archdoor to the Endless Library and find and lit all three candles. Candles are located one in the each of the worlds of the Endless Library, usually on the second floor. Candles are hidden in the rooms with no entrance from the same floor, so you have to find a way and get there from the upper floor.

After performing Ritual of Binding on the third floor of the third world of the Endless Library, the Old Ones are captured in the library and you sacrifice yourself as a library guardian.

You read aloud the ancient words of the ritual of binding.
Drawn to the candles you lit, the Old Ones stop their rampage, become quiet, and drift lethargically toward the heart of the library.
After they are again safely contained within their prison, you complete the ritual by performing the final step: surrendering yourself to remain forever in the library as its guardian.

Great Final
You have to gather all three Soul Orbs, open an archdoor to the Endless Library and find and lit all three candles. Also, you must have all three sacred items equipped. Sacred items are Holy Symbol, Sandals and Consecration Kit which are located in the shadow worlds. You can get there using Dusty Books, each is located in the hidden room in the second world of the each area. Performing the Ritual of Binding without all three sacred items will result in a good or bad final, depending on the number of candles lit.

The Explorer's Journal, Page 4 contains a mere hint on how to achieve this final. So, you can, but it is very unlikely that you complete with this final on a first run without cheating (i.e. reading this wiki).

Tip: Every sacred item occupies very useful slot for boots, kit or gear. Also, you cannot just drop boots, kit or gear in any place, you have to exchange them for something of the same type. So I think the easiest way when you find a sacred item is to grab it, leaving your current item in the shadow world, go back to the shop in the first world of the area and leave the sacred item there, exchanging it with something in the shop. Then return to the shadow world and grab your item back.

Tip: After you have cleared the Endless Library and got to the Altar of Binding, you can safely return to the start area and make a run for the shops grabbing the sacred items. As the shops are in the first worlds of every area and the worlds are already cleaned, it should be fast and easy.

After performing Ritual of Binding on the third floor of the third world of the Endless Library, the Old Ones are captured in the library and you, at last, are free!

You read aloud the ancient words of the ritual of binding.
Drawn to the candles you lit, the Old Ones stop their rampage, become quiet, and drift lethargically toward the heart of the library.
After they are again safely contained within their prison, you complete the ritual by performing the final step: placing a consecrated symbol in your stead to ward the Old Ones.
At long last, you are free of the library. And the Old Ones sleep, forever...

NewGame+
After you complete the game with any final (no matter with or without all candles lit), after watching the credits and starting a new game you will find a white orb (labelled the "Soul of the Librarian") in the center of the starting library.

If you grab it, the following text will appear:

Welcome to New Game+ !
Collecting this soul has activated a more challenging version of Eldritch.
The effect will wear off after you die.

The game is more harder indeed:

* fire- or poison-ball shooting enemies shoot much faster
* there are much fewer items can be found in the rooms
* the enemy hit takes two health points instead of one
* the Amulet of Destruction can be found much later in the game, etc

The NewGame+ mode will not continue if you die.
