["John Steinbeck Library, Salinas California" appears on screen, as the scene opens with a male librarian sitting at the front desk reading Volume One of the "Star Wars: Empire" graphic novel, when the phone rings]
BENJAMIN: John Steinbeck Library, the reference desk. This is Benjamin, how may I help you?
[cut to stock footage of a model spaceship flying through "space" (as "Somewhere near the Crab Nebula" appears on screen), then cut to a male pilot inside the ship speaking into his phone]
CAPTAIN: Yeah, uh, hi! Listen, I'm in kind of a jam here, and I need some help! You have access to the internet, right?
[cut back to the library]
BENJAMIN: Yes, we do have internet access.
[cut back to inside the spaceship]
CAPTAIN: My ship's computer trying to blow us up! I need to know how to shut it down, now!
[cut back to the library, as the camera zooms out to show that an older female librarian is sitting at the opposite end of the reference desk, typing on her computer]
BENJAMIN: Would your ship's computer happen to be a HAL 9000?
[cut back to inside the spaceship]
CAPTAIN: Great Jupiter! How did you know?
[cut back to the library]
BENJAMIN: Just last week, NASA announced a recall of the HAL 9000 series ...
[the female librarian gets up (frustrated that her computer's not working?) and walks off camera]
BENJAMIN: Due to malfunctions in the subroutine which would cause the computer to explode the ship into a massive fireball.
[cut back to inside the spaceship, as the captain stares blankly while cricket sound effects play, then cut back to the library]
BENJAMIN: Just a moment, sir, while I search the internet.
[cut back to inside the spaceship]
CAPTAIN: Say HAL, you wouldn't mind shutting off that self-destruct sequence you started, would you?
[cut to footage from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"]
HAL 9000: I'm afraid I can't do that.
[cut back to the library, as Benjamin is typing on his computer while the other librarian returns with a large hammer and raises it over her head]
BENJAMIN: I'm sorry, our internet service is a little slow today.
[just before the other librarian brings the hammer down on her keyboard, cut back to inside the spaceship]
CAPTAIN: How long is it gonna take?!
[cut back to the library]
BENJAMIN: That webpage is still loading ...
[cut back to inside the spaceship]
CAPTAIN: This crazy computer's about to blow up my ship!
[cut back to the library]
BENJAMIN: Ahh, it's down again!
[cut back to footage from "2001: A Space Odyssey"]
HAL 9000: This sort of thing has cropped up before ... and it has always been due to human error.
[an alarm goes off, then cut to the stock footage of the spaceship as it explodes]
[cut back to inside the library]
BENJAMIN: Sir, I've got it ... Hello?
[he hears a dial tone on the other end]
BENJAMIN: Are you still there?
[he shakes his head and hangs up, as the other librarian returns wearing a welder's mask and trying to light a blowtorch]
BENJAMIN: That's it, we must get fast internet service ... No matter what!
[he gets up and tries to take the blowtorch away from the other librarian, as an unseen Rod Serling-esque narrator begins speaking]
NARRATOR: Benjamin MacBean, a librarian who's realized there are moments in life that can crystalize your thoughts and bring you to a firm decision for the good of everyone ... A decision you can only see from your vantage point in The Librarian Zone!

The Librarian Zone wins!
Fall 2009, California State Library sponsored the "Fast Internet Matters" video contest. Submissions were judged based on clarity of message, creativity and video quality.
Our winning video will be announced today (Dec. 14) in Sacramento at the Opportunity Online Summit, a conference to develop strategies for improving Internet connections in libraries across the state. Salinas Public Library will be awarded $10,000 to expand and improve Internet access at the library.
Special thanks to my co-writer-director-producer, Garland Thompson Jr (this project could not have happened without him). I would also like to thank the talent: Benjamin MacBean, Anthony Lacono and Jayne Wilsey. Great job everyone!
