Case Study No. 0361: Mia, Nic Kempster, and Eddie Fineman

Doubt on Loan (trailer) (c)NFTS 2012
2:44
It is a murky time for British libraries. Many are in dire straits as they try and prove their relevance in today's hyper-modern technology based world. But it's not all doom and gloom. On the back of mass outcry and public mobility a whole series of action has been taken to save libraries and centre them back at the heart of local communities. Shawcross Library and Interactive Centre is one such library managed by a very American solution in Head Librarian Mia Taylor-Clarke. This is Shawcross's great white hope...We're not kidding.

Doubt on Loan follows the trials and tribulations of the staff at Shawcross Library and interactive centre with Anglophile and over-enthused American ex-pat Mia, wise cracking but self-conscious Nic Kempster, and goofily affable, but "on the spectrum" Eddie Fineman, as they overcome their warped sense of views and precarious judgments to make their library, friendship and lives work.

["National Film and Television School presents" appears on screen]
["Welcome to Shawcross Library. Meet your librarians ... " appears on screen]
["Mia" appears on screen, next to a to-do list ("Renew visa, George Michael tickets, Teach homeless man to read ... ") and a cover letter to the Shawcross Council (starting with "For the Attention of the Head Librarian" where "Head Librarian" is crossed out and "Library Manager!!!" is written out in red ink), then cut to a young woman with cats-eyes glasses typing on her computer]
MIA: [reading] "I heard the UK libraries' plight, and like an early morning drunken moan from a deeply troubled older sister, it was a call I'd had to answer ... "
[she stops and looks over her work]
MIA: [pause] Nailed it ...
["Nic" appears on screen, next to a playbill for The Great Gatsby, then cut to two young male librarians sitting at a table]
NIC: [crying] I ... I read War and Titting Peace! Awww, I love her!
[he starts to slide under the table]
NIC: Ahhh ...
["Eddie" appears on screen, then cut to the two male librarians talking while Mia (without glasses) looks on]
NIC: "Ulysses" ... What's that one about again?
EDDIE: It's about a man with a ginger beard who travels through space with a hot blue alien and a wacky robot sidekick!
NIC: Oh ...
["Mia's been hired to save Shawcross ... " appears on screen, then cut to Mia and Nic in her office as Eddie peeks his head in through the door]
EDDIE: You said to call you if she ever came back, and ... she came back.
NIC: Aw!
[he rushes off, then cut to a woman wearing an orange lycra Morphsuit dancing in the childrens' section next to a cardboard sign reading "Save our libraries"]
ORANGEWOMAN: Save our libraries! Save--
[Nic comes running in]
NIC: Hey! Hey!
ORANGEWOMAN: Oh shit!
[she grabs her sign and runs off]
NIC: Get outta here, lunatic!
[cut to Mia at the front desk, handing a book to a male patron]
MIA: Enjoy your reading, and you have a nice day now!
[she smiles broadly]
MALE PATRON: Piss off!
[he walks off, as she gives a look of shock]
["One step at a time ... " appears on screen, then cut to the three librarians talking in the stacks]
MIA: We've got this reading tomorrow.
NIC: What reading?
EDDIE: There's a man coming!
[cut to Eddie in costume (dressed as an old-timey hobo?) speaking with author Philip Dunleavy]
EDDIE: Well, hello dere, sir! I am an author, I do declare!
[cut back to Mia]
MIA: He's doing a tour of all the best libraries with his new book, "Survivors" ...
[cut to a meek-looking female patron approaching Eddie at the front desk]
FEMALE PATRON: Hi. Um, I was just wondering ... about the Philip Dunleavy book reading?
EDDIE: [pause] Who?
[cut back to Mia talking to her co-workers]
EDDIE: "Survivors" ... is about zombies in Manhattan!
MIA: Maybe there's a way of capitalizing on that film and getting a load of young people through those doors.
EDDIE: A zombie flash mob!
NIC: No!
[cut back to the female patron at the front desk, as Mia walks up and starts doing a zombie impersonation]
MIA: Uhhhh, ahh ...
[she sticks her hands out towards the patron, who is visibly shaken]
FEMALE PATRON: Wh-What are you, what are you doing?
MIA: Uhh!
[she drops the act and smiles, as the patron turns to Eddie for reassurance]
FEMALE PATRON: You should be--
[he instead rolls his eyes back into his head and sticks out his tongue]
EDDIE: Guahhhh!
[cut to Nic confronting Eddie in the back of the library]
NIC: What exactly did you search for when you looked up "Survivors"?
EDDIE: "Survivors cool", maybe "Survivors cool and amazing" ... Why?
NIC: So no "book" in there?
[cut to Eddie modeling his costume for Nic]
EDDIE: Hello ... I like words!
[cut back to Eddie and Nic talking]
EDDIE: No "book" ...
["But it's not going to be easy ... " appears on screen, then cut to Dunleavy screaming at the librarians]
PHILIP: Perversity! Outrage! Slander!
[cut back to Eddie and Nic talking]
NIC: No "Dunleavy"?
[cut to Philip getting in Nic's face]
PHILIP: I'm a pretty fuckin' big deal ...
[cut back to Eddie and Nic talking]
EDDIE: No "Dunleavy" ...
NIC: What if I were to tell you ... the book is about 9/11?
[cut to Mia giving her two co-workers the throat slashing motion, as they cower in the doorway]
EDDIE: [pause] So what ya thinkin'?
[cut to various scenes of the zombie flash mob, as Mia desperately tries to lead Philip away from the library]

Doubt on Loan (TV - 2012)

Director: Ian Aryeh
Writers: Mike O'Leary, Ian Aryeh (co-writer)
Stars: Louise Ford, Christian Brassington and David Fynn

A dysfunctional group of misfits and dropouts try to prove the relevance of their own lives as librarians endorsing the relevance of libraries, ironically at a time when they are being further pushed into the abyss in our hyper-modern technology based world. In all Doubt on Loan focuses on the dysfunctional librarians of Shawcross Library and Interactive centre, as they navigate their way through running a failing library in our increasingly hyper-modern technology based world, relationships and their pasts. Making matters worse their warped views, and precarious judgments often lead them to trouble, creating a myriad of uncomfortable situations that usually only get worse before they get better (which doesn't often happen)

Part of the TV pilot revolved around a fair few people dressing up as american-themed zombies, most of whom are above (see if you can spot Abraham Lincoln, Madonna, Uncle Sam, Supergirl and Elvis) My favorite by far was Mia's zombie Statue of Liberty costume.
